THE CAMBRIA SUITES TEAM
The hospitality construction team at Cambria combined members from both Kirkland and WEAVERCOOKE, building a
collage of seasoned veterans to produce a tight-knit camaraderie and finish strong on a difficult project.
OVERVIEW
Completed in late 2017, this 13-story, $30 million project adds another
bump to the skyline of downtown Asheville. The zero-lot-line development
has a level of below-grade parking, a street level lobby with 5,000 sf of retail
shell with two levels of elevated parking above. Level 4 features a restaurant
and bar accompanied by 4,000 sf rooftop terrace with views of downtown
and the surrounding Blue Ridge mountains. The 136-room guest tower
utilizes a light gauge steel load bearing system with precast concrete floor
planks. This hospitality construction project was a joint venture between
Kirkland, Inc. and WEAVERCOOKE.
The site staging and excavation required extensive coordination with the
City. We had to account for both traffic and pedestrian safety as well as
protect underground utilities during the installation of a vertical shoring
system at the perimeter of the below-grade parking.
WEAVERCOOKE utilized 3D models from the architect, structural engineer
and electrical subcontractor in combination with plumbing and HVAC
models developed by our in-house Virtual Design & Construction group. This
precise digital modelling allowed us to organize the intricate relationships of
the various building systems. This process helped us detect and eliminate
clashes between these systems in advance, thus saving time and avoiding
costly solutions that would have occurred much later in the process.

CAMBRIA SUITES
Hospitality Construction
Project in Asheville, NC
IMPACT
Before the Cambria hospitality construction project was completed, there were
no hotels in downtown Asheville that offered both conference room and dining
facilities in the same venue. The Cambria filled this niche by blending these two
needs on the hotel’s fourth floor.
The hotel is also situated on land that was once occupied by a declining clothing
store and its adjacent parking lot, revitalizing a portion of the city that had been
stagnant for years. Although not required by the city, the design incorporated
119 off-street parking spaces (on three levels of the building) for visitors that
would have taken up street parking.
Besides being centrally located in the heart of downtown, the Cambria is
adjacent to the Grove Arcade—another WEAVERCOOKE project—which
contributes to the economy of the shops and restaurants located in the
building.
There is also a 3,372 sf street level “shell” space for a future retail/dining/tenant
development on what is becoming one of the busiest corners in the city.
WEAVERCOOKE construction is a leading general contractor across North Carolina, providing quality multi-family construction, senior-
living construction, and affordable housing construction in Greensboro, Durham, Charlotte and Asheville and throughout the Southeast.
