Lee Walker Heights
THE LEE WALKER HEIGHTS TEAM
OVERVIEW WEAVERCOOKE provided construction for this high-profile project, which involved the demolition and replacement of 96 units in one of the first public housing communities in Asheville with a mixed-use space that combines 212 units of mixed-income housing with 11,000 sf of attached retail space. Maple Crest at Lee Walker Heights is built around indoor and outdoor gathering spaces and play areas that encourage the strong social ties that Lee Walker Heights has long been known for. The new community center is much larger than the original neighborhood’s and provides many amenities for residents. The single loop road was replaced by two new roads that prioritize pedestrian and bicycle access. The new roads are accessible for both school buses and public transportation. Ninety-six of the new units were set aside as subsidized housing for former residents, allowing them to return to the new property while paying the same rent they had prior to construction.

LEE WALKER HEIGHTS Affordable Housing Upgrade Project in Asheville, NC
Lee Walker Heights overview
IMPACT Lee Walker Heights has a long history in Asheville, and the new Maple Crest at Lee Walker Heights was designed to address the needs and values of the existing community. Residents of Lee Walker Heights were consulted early on in the design phase of this project. It was important to the Developer and the City of Asheville that residents’ needs were prioritized throughout construction. WEAVERCOOKE worked closely with many MWBE and Section 3 firms on this project. We also partnered with organizations such as AB Tech and Green Opportunities to bring community members in for job fairs, resulting in high participation from MWBE and local trade contractors, as well as one direct hire onto the WEAVERCOOKE team from the Lee Walker Heights community. From early in the design stage to the end of construction, WEAVERCOOKE worked closely with the Developer to make sure residents had a strong voice throughout the construction process.
Impact of the Lee Walker Heights project
WEAVERCOOKE construction is a leading general contractor across North Carolina, providing quality multi-family construction, senior- living construction, and affordable housing construction in Greensboro, Durham, Charlotte and Asheville and throughout the Southeast.
