Battery Park Hotel - December 2017
Construction is wrapping up at the Battery Park Hotel in downtown Asheville. WEAVERCOOKE and Kirkland, Inc. first began Preconstruction on this hotel as a Joint Venture in 2013. Since then, Battery Park has been one of our most rewarding and challenging projects.
This 13 story, $25 million project is located in the heart of downtown Asheville. The zero-lot-line development has a level of below grade parking, a street level lobby with 5,000 SF of retail shell with two levels of elevated parking above. Level 4 features a restaurant and bar accompanied by 4,000 SF of rooftop terrace with views of downtown Asheville and the mountains. The 136 room guest tower utilizes a light gauge steel load bearing system with precast concrete floor planks.
The site staging and excavation required coordination with the City, both in terms of traffic/pedestrian safety and protecting underground utilities during the installation of a vertical shoring system at the perimeter of the below grade parking. Our team utilized the Architect’s, Structural Engineer’s and Electrical subcontractor’s 3D models, combined with Plumbing and HVAC models developed by our in-house Virtual Design & Construction group to coordinate the intricate relationships of the various building systems. This process allowed us to detect and eliminate clashes among these systems in advance, saving time and avoiding costly solutions that would have occurred much later in the process.
Coincidentally, the hotel is directly across Page Avenue from the renowned Grove Arcade. WEAVERCOOKE renovated the historic Grove Arcade in 2002, making it western North Carolina’s largest commercial building. Once Battery Park Hotel is completed, WEAVERCOOKE will have constructed two adjacent downtown Asheville iconic structures; one about 90 years older than its neighbor.
